Ooooh, how I LOVE fall! The sights, the scents, the flavors. Oh, my goodness. It’s a total treat for the senses!
But there’s one thing that doesn’t agree with me. It’s the loss of daylight. And when we here in the US ‘fall back’ with our clocks for daylight savings time, we have even less daylight during waking hours. It tends to throw me into a combination of blues and hibernation. There’s a name for it – turns out I’m not the only one with SAD!
So one thing I try to do is brighten up my home! I bring in as much light as I can through the windows and turn on lamps everywhere (I get that from my mom – she was famous for turning on every lamp in the house)! What does my mantel have to do with light? Read on, my friend!

My ‘Happy Fall, Y’all’ mantel:
I think mantels are my favorite space to decorate. It’s such fun to mix elements and add touches of whimsy and unexpected items.
The focal point of this year’s fall mantel is this cute little guy! Around his neck is a simple grapevine wreath. Don’t you love these deer heads that are all the rage right now? I’m going to do another post about how this one came about.
Here’s something you don’t see on a mantel everyday…
Isn’t that the cutest little lamp? It’s perfect in this vignette, and it really warms up the family room with its glow. And I think it will warm my spirits as the days continue to get shorter!
And I just had to include my twine pears! They are still so cute, yet such an easy and frugal craft! If you’re dying to make on yourself, check it out HERE.
My sweet deer hangs over the DIY chalkboard tray that you can read about here. And the chalkboard lettering technique you can read about here! Now, I’ll quit yakking and let the photos do the talking! Hope you love it as much as we do!
Oh, and in the next shot, you can see how I managed to plug in my little lamp. See the extension cord running down the right side of the fireplace trim? It’s secured with masking tape and is plugged in behind the curtain. I am standing very close to that window, so the cord doesn’t show from the rest of the room.
The elements of my mantel, aside from what I’ve mentioned already, include lots of pumpkins and natural elements, including a burlap table runner, which helps conceal the lamp cord as it runs behind everything. And I just threw together the twine and leaf banner – I’ll be telling you about that soon!
