Hey, Hey!
I’m back again with an installment of the Lowe’s DIY DAYS Blog Hop. And this time, I struggled with what to do. As I wrapped around each aisle of the store, I gazed at everything from dowel rods to 1 x 4-s trying to spur the creative juices. I was beginning to feel as though I had used them all up at the journaling party I went to on Monday night!
Don’t forget that each time we do the DIY Days blog hop, you can also find more ideas over on Hometalk! Just search with the hashtag #LowesDIYDays
Anyway, as I looked around the store, I saw the selection of sheet metal and a plan began to emerge!
So here is my DIY Magnetic Spice Board:
Wanting a spice holder that could be mounted inside a cabinet, I purchased a 12″ x 18 ” sheet of metal at Lowe’s for a mere 4.68. Then I came home and worked out a design to paint on it with chalkboard paint. I have a border punch, so I punched a border out of cardstock and affixed it at the top by spraying the back of the stencils with adhesive, forming a rectangle. When I sprayed the paint, it left an awesome design, as well as a good-sized space in which to label my ‘spice board’.
Next I purchased some containers with lids and affixed magnet disks to the bottom of them. I punched circles from address labels and wrote the names of my spices for the tops of the containers. Then I was ready to mount the board.
Using industrial velcro, I affixed one side on the inside of my cabinet door, the other side of the hook and loop tape to the underside of the sheet metal. This way, I can remove the board and sit it on my counter when I want. And it sticks beautifully… that magnetic spice board isn’t going anywhere! Have you ever used adhesive-backed Velcro? The easiest way to attach it is to stick the pieces together, then cut to sized, then peel adhesive off of only one side, stick to one surface. Peel off the other side and stick your object to whatever you want to mount it to.
And here is the finished DIY Magnetic Spice Board:
While I’m mostly pleased at how it turned out, I am going to try to improve on it a bit. For example:
- I looked everywhere for suitable containers, and I just don’t think these are it. They protrude too far, I’d prefer to find some shorter ones that are a bit bigger in diameter. UPDATE: I found these from amazon that I think I’ll order!
- The board may need a frame. I thought I wanted it flat, and still think that’s better for inside a cabinet door, but it might look better if the sheet of metal was in some sort of frame.
What do you think? Have you tried making any kind of magnetic board?
And here’s that image to pin, if you’re so inclined! And keep scrolling down for the other projects on the blog hop…
