I’ve been dying to do these posts for such a long time! I consider myself a ‘glamour fashionista’ from way back (yeah… way, waaaaay back *wink – I hope you can see my tongue in my cheek!) and I have learned a couple of things about makeup and skin care over the years! So today I am bringing to you my favorite makeup and skin care tips!
We’ll cover makeup in the next post, so don’t miss Part 2!
For Part 1 of my best secrets – let’s start with skin and body care:
Skin and Body
Cleansing is king! Even as a college student, I rarely went to bed without removing my makeup. I just never slept well without ‘taking it all off’. And after years of trying expensive cleansers, I found that what works best for me is simply a sensitive skin cleansing bar. It lathers up great and I just wash everything off in one step – makeup, mascara, everything!
A good eye cream. I’ve never needed much moisturizer all over my face, but I’m a real believer in my eye cream! I’ve used the same cream for close to 20 years, and have been told many times that I don’t look my age. Without divulging exactly what that IS, suffice it to say that I have 2 grown and married daughters and one gorgeous grandson! Yet I have no wrinkles between my brows, and only the faintest crow’s feet at my eyes. This particular cream has both a gel, to fight puffiness, and a cream to fight wrinkles!
Sleep. I have found that the actual texture of my skin changes with lack of sleep. When I don’t get enough zzz’s my skin isn’t as smooth or clear.
Diet. And of course, what you feed your skin matters. As a teen, I suffered with terrible acne. Most of my problem was hereditary but I’m sure the teenaged diet didn’t help. My skin does best when I eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies, lean meats like fish and chicken and stay away from high-fat, sugary stuff. Shopping the perimeter of the grocery store is a great strategy – that’s where all the fresh, non-processed foods are found.
Drink lots of water! Water is a healing liquid. The best way to hydrate your skin is from the inside out! Lately, I haven’t been practicing what I preach, but I’m always trying to do better.
Lather up with lotion. One of the best things you can do for your skin is to keep it hydrated with a great moisturizer. Lotion up after your shower especially after shaving your legs. This will go a long way towards preventing flaky skin. Exfoliate all over, but make sure to use a moisturizing lotion afterward.
One of my best tips for foot care is a pumice stone. I use one between pedicures to keep my feet and heels smooth. Summer’s coming, so we’re all going to want to pamper our feet for sandal weather. One of the best pumices I’ve found came from the dollar store! A good pumice will take care of rough dry skin on your feet and heels.
Another essential aspect of skin care is sun protection. Years ago, as a beauty advisor for a cosmetics company, we were given a scenario: If you took a child and applied sunscreen to her skin beginning at the age of 6 months, and applied it every day, how old would her skin look at age 50? I remember being stunned by the answer – 25!! Now that I’m older, I really see the benefits of sun protection. And I’m going to just go ahead and say this: stay out of the tanning beds and put sunscreen on at the beach! I have a friend who works in a dermatology office and she will preach to you about this. It truly is a fact that sun exposure is the number one aging factor for our skin, not to mention the increased risk of skin cancer.
In light of finding a great moisturizer with sun protection, I was given the opportunity to try a new product: the NO-AD Anti-Aging Body Moisturizers. You can find them in the Skin Care Section at select Wal-Mart locations. To find a Wal-Mart near you that carries this great moisturizer, CLICK HERE.

Oh, and one area in particular to be aware of is your hands. Yep, your hands. Next time you are in your car, notice how much sun your hands get on the steering wheel. Often, as we get older, our hands are the first part of our bodies to give away our age! I’m really excited about the NO-AD Prevent & Brighten Anti-Aging Body Moisturizer! I plan to apply it religiously, especially to my arms and hands before I leave my house to get in the car every day.
And the NO-AD people have been so kind as to allow me to offer you an awesome coupon worth $2 off one of the new moisturizers! Woo-hoo!!
Be sure to stay tuned for the Part 2 of My Best Makeup and Skin Care Secrets!
