I know lots of people are already thinking about Christmas (I’m thinking about it, believe me!), but Thanksgiving just might be my favorite holiday! I love getting together with family without all the commercial trappings that accompanies the Christmas Season.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas and go all out but there’s something to be said for the simplicity of Thanksgiving… and what the day means.
I sure hope you are able to celebrate the day with family, and that you have many blessings for which to be thankful!
Preparations are coming together around here! Much cooking is still to be done, but I’m giving a sneak peek at the Thanksgiving Tablescape!
The Secret to a Great Tablescape
One secret to a great tablescape is layering. Much like we do when we add jewelry, scarves etc. as we get dressed, layering a table creates interest and completes the look.
My table is a refectory-style table, which expands to 130” with both leaves extended. I have one tablecloth that is right at 130”, so what I do is overlay it on top of two matching smaller ones. Since I don’t use a table pad, this also gives a little more padding for the table setting. The long cloth is also my favorite… a homespun-like linen, hem-stitched tablecloth.
Next I gather a pretty piece of sheer brown, chiffon fabric. I just kind of scrunch it together as a runner down the middle of the table. Then I place one of my favorite baskets in the center. Taking a swath of gold-mesh ribbon, I weave it in and through the basket the length of the table runner.
Now the fun begins! Of course, I use my glam white pumpkins. Add some spheres, vases and goblets with candles, votives and glitzy pinecones, and you can really have some fun!
I scatter some of the organza leaves – the ones I used for the fall napkin rings – here and there.
Finally, to add to the idea that Christmas is right around the corner, I added these pretty brown poinsettias.
This rustic glam fall tablescape is built around some of my favorite dishes: The Friendly Village by Johnson Bros. They are so beautiful with their brown border and village scenes! These are wonderful for either Thanksgiving or Christmas… or all winter for that matter!
They always make me think of this song that I learned as a child. I used to think the song was about Christmas, but it was actually written about Thanksgiving!
Over the river, and through the wood,
to Grandfather’s house we go;
the horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
through the white and drifted snow.
Over the river, and through the wood-
oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose,
as over the ground we go.
Over the river, and through the wood,
to have a first-rate play.
Hear the bells ring, “Ting a ling ding!”
Hurray for Thanksgiving Day!
